Reports in England today suggest that Chelsea will take the possibility of calling Ethan Ampadu back from his loan with RB Leipzig early into consideration in January.

Chelsea prodigy

Ampadu, a 19-year-old central-defender who can also play in a defensive midfield role, came up through the youth ranks of Exeter City, before making the move to Chelsea in 2017.

And the young stopper has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most highly-regarded starlets on the books of the Blues.

Despite his tender years, Ampadu emerged as a regular member of Chelsea’s first-team squad last season, going on to notch 5 appearances across all competitions.

In addition, the gifted teen has already racked up 10 caps for Wales.

With the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen all ahead of him in the central-defensive pecking order at Stamford Bridge, however, the path to consistent playing-time under new boss Frank Lampard was always likely to prove a difficult one to navigate for Ampadu this season.

As such, in a bid to aid his development, the Welshman joined Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig back in July.

Ampadu made the move to the Red Bull Arena on loan for the 2019/20 campaign.

Ampadu struggling

However, to say that the Chelsea starlet’s time in Germany has since proven underwhelming would be putting it lightly.

Ampadu has yet to make a single appearance for Leipzig, who currently sit two points off the Bundesliga summit.

And, as per a report from the Sun, if the versatile stopper’s game-time doesn’t improve over the coming months, then Chelsea will consider cutting his temporary spell away from the club short.

Ampadu impressed for Wales during the country’s draw with Slovakia this past Thursday, but both Dragons boss Ryan Giggs, and Frank Lampard, are said to be concerned about the damage that his lack of time on the pitch at club level may be causing.

As such, a return to London in January, ahead of another loan spell elsewhere, now looks a possibility.
