We’re sure he won’t, but if Bruce Buffer, the UFC’s legendary “Voice of the Octagon” ever falls on hard times, he can always head across the pond to announce train arrivals on London’s famed Underground network.
Some of the station announcers in London have developed a reputation for being quirky and amusing. After all, announcing the same trains, making the same stops, for hours on end, day after day, must get a little boring.
So the announcer on the platform at Bank Station on London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) service has decided to liven up commuters’ days by adopting a ring announcer persona as he hails the arrival of the latest service to Lewisham.
Clearly inspired by Buffer and his legendary boxing announcer brother Michael, the announcer builds gradually before reaching a crescendo as the train arrives at the platform. And we can enjoy his work in the video below.
“Welcoming all passengers to Bank Station DLR arena, welcome to the main event,” he began. “The train now fighting out of the Platform 9 corner is your Lewisham service. Calling at Canary Wharf, Cutty Sark and Greenwich.”
Then, in classic ring announcer style, he starts to crank up the intensity as he lists the train’s “record.”
“This train needs no introduction,” he continued. “Weighing in at 600 tons of pure steel, always on time with zero delays. Introducing the undefeated, undisputed best train service in the world, fighter DLR Lewisham!”
Then he signs off with an homage to Bruce’s brother, legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer, with a grand: “Let’s get ready to travel!”
As a Brit who has spent countless hours stuck on London’s transport network over the years, I can confirm that stuff like this always brightens up an otherwise dull commute, and would love to one day see Bruce himself take control of the microphone to announce an incoming train or two next time he’s in London for a UFC event.
Surely his booming declaration of “It’s time!” as the sliding doors open at the platform would send productivity in the capital skyrocketing as energized commuters head off with Buffer’s voice ringing in their ears.
